When I was younger I always had my nose in a book. I would ignore the TV, choosing the written word instead and it would take me twice as long to do anything as I couldn't put down that day's book whilst I was doing it. The love of literature never left me and I ended up doing my degree in English Literature. Unfortunately at the moment I find very little time to indulge this pleasure as having a toddler, working part time and blogging takes up pretty much all of my day!
It is nice to see that this is something I have passed down to my son, and he is happiest sat on the floor surrounded by his books. He likes to be read to but he loves to read to himself. He picks up a book, opens it, points to the words and babbles his own version of what is going on in the picture. He reads a whole book this way, turning every page and when finished he puts it back down before choosing another and starting again.
At the moment we have story time in the mornings as he gets far too excited when the books come out that he cannot really have a bedtime story yet. Every morning we cuddle up and read a book and we point to the pictures and turn the pages together. I find it very difficult not to read all the words before we turn over but he goes at his own speed, favouring some pages more than others. I love watching him learn and cannot wait to teach him to read!
Since his birth I have been told constantly that Dylan is the spitting image of his daddy and it is nice to see that he got something from me. I hope his love for books continues, maybe I might get to read more too that way! Until then, I love the peace that I get when he is sat on the floor looking at his books and I love watching his imagination grow.
Do your children love reading? Did it start when they were little or did they grow into it?

It is so nice that he loves his books! That is such a lovely picture of him reading. I read Lucas a bedtime story every night and he has just started to bring books to me in the day, I hope this is a sign! I am always taking him the library in the hope he will love reading as much as me.
ReplyDeleteThat is lovely, Dylan just brings me his shape sorter over and over in the day, I think he prefers reading his books to himself!
DeleteLove the blog. What is the book he is reading in the picture?
ReplyDeleteIt is a wheels on the bus book with a little button that plays the tune. He sits and dances along to this one
DeleteAww, so lovely to see he loves reading. I hope Harry will learn to love reading. Not a week goes past that we haven't read atleast 3 times to the bump....hoping it may have digested in his mind that reading is good:-)....so lovely that Dylan gets excited by it and not find it a chore xxx
ReplyDeleteNever too early to start reading to them! sung to Dylan a lot before he was born and it was the same songs that calmed him down as a newborn., Maybe it will be books that keep Harry happy x
DeleteLovely pic of him reading, I have so many of Oliver doing the same thing. We have so many books in my house, the boys have their own billy bookcase that is used daily, they love to read. Books are brilliant and it's great that little D has shown such a fab interest in them so early x x
ReplyDeleteHope it continues then! I want to get him a little bookcase and reading corner in his room when we move house later this month x
DeleteThat's so lovely! Bob will look at her books and babble but she doesn't turn every page. That is too cute! x
ReplyDeleteBoth mine (nearly 9 and 6) are total bookworms and I love it. We read to them every night from very early on and they have access (and always have had access) to loads of books and things to read. They read on their own but we still read to them most nights. I love that sometimes when they wake up early, I can lie in bed and hear that they are reading and sometimes don't come downstairs for ages.
ReplyDeleteI love to wake up and listen to Dylan telling stories to his teddies! Hope it stays that way for you x
DeleteI have one son who loves to read and one who's not as interested. The lover is currently 8 and is already what they call a free reader at school. Harry Potter has really engaged him as have all the Roald Dahl books, but anything will do I just have to check the content is suitable. He even has a mini dictionary to check words he's unsure of.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast the 9 old reads well but would rather be playing computer games. The books he does dip in and out of are factual ones like the Guiness book of Records, joke books and Where's Wally?
It's strange because we read with them both the same, coming to us at the same time through adoption we did all our story reading together. It's just there personalities and preferences. We love books and I still read to them both now. Currently We are reading M.Morpogurgo's My Friend Walter.
Great post.
Excellent choice, I still love Harry Potter and Roald Dahl! We each have different personalities and so I guess some take to books whilst others don't. We were all brought up the same way but my brother has never liked reading and the last book he read was back at school! x
DeleteJust wait until he starts reading books that were your favourites when you were a child... My daughter (who is 7) recently became obsessed with The Famous Five, and I can't tell you how happy it makes me feel to watch her!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get him onto some Enid Blyton, I loved all that stuff when I was little, and of course Harry Potter too! x
DeleteI always had my nose in a book and it looks like Mads is definitely taking after me- she loves books and reading! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post ;) I can't wait until my little girl is old enough to enjoy books properly :)) at the moment she just tries to eat them... So not getting the complete Enid Bluron collection out for her just yet... Lol x
ReplyDeleteSounds like she does enjoy them, just in her own way! :p
DeleteI love books! I especially did when I was a kid. My mom potty trained me by putting a stack of books next to my baby toilet, because she knew I wouldnt get up until i flipped through all of them, haha. There are even pictures to prove it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely refreshing post to read! My daughter is an avid reader, and always has been, just like your son. I bet he'll be reading by the time he starts school!
ReplyDeleteA love of reading is one of the best things you can instill in your kids x
