1. Did you work before becoming a mum?
I was doing the very glamorous job of waitressing before I became pregnant with Dylan
. I graduated from university several years before, but I hadn't worked out what I wanted to do yet, so I was enjoying having no commitments and a disposable income for a while. An unplanned pregnancy put a stop to that but I wouldn't change a thing.

2. What is your current situation?
I don't want to work full time while I have small children at home, so it looks like a few more years of serving pizza for me! The best thing about it (besides the free pizza) is that I can leave at the end of my shift and not look back. I will never have work to take home with me (well except for the pizza) and being shift work, they will work around me and what my childcare options are. Eventually I would like a career in. . . something really good.
3. Freestyle – got your own point you’d like to get across on this issue? Here’s your chance…
At secondary school we were set up with almost impossible expectations of life in the real world. We were told that if we went to university, the world would be our oyster. That there would be job opportunities everywhere we looked doing all sorts of amazing things that those 'less educated folks' could not even dream of. Reality- experience counts for a lot more than education. After graduation, I applied for hundreds upon hundreds of career jobs, but heard nothing. Zilch. Nada. I wasn't aiming high, in fact most of the jobs would have been a paycut from my waitressing wages!
So my point is not that university is pointless, it is one of the best experiences you will ever have. Just don't expect things to happen afterwards just because you have a degree. There is so much more to it.

Thanks for taking part...Agreed about degrees not being worth as much as people think. I used to think mine would be like a golden ticket, nowadays people are paying for internships in order to get some experience. I wish I had done a sandwich course of some kind, people doing that all seemed to get good jobs off the back of them...Great post!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had done a sandwich course too but somewhere abroad, just for the experience of living abroad. Wasn't too easy with an English degree though!
DeleteIt is very true that university is a great experience but certainly not a job guarantee at all! I'm a teacher but since I became a full time mum, I have done all sorts of jobs to make ends meet . I hope that you do manage to establish a career eventually x

DeleteHello, thanks so much for taking part. I totally agree on the Uni front, even more so than ever now fees are so high - it is so important to really think about what you want and the best way to get it, rather than assuming Uni will be your springboard into a fabulous job.
