3 Months Old

3 months is meant to signal the end of that newborn phase and the beginning of just being a 'baby', but I think Finn is reluctant to leave behind the term new baby.

That is Dylan holding his hand
After another hospital admission due to his weight we seem to be back on track and at 13 weeks he weighs 10lb 11oz.  He has been diagnosed as dairy intolerant and cutting out cow's milk has made such a difference to our dinky dude.  He is like a new baby, so much happier and more content now that he doesn't have what must have been a constant tummy ache.

The Milestones

When Finn arrived, we had no idea that we had such an ordeal ahead.  He cried and he cuddled, he fed and he cuddled some more and he was our perfect baby boy.  When he was 12 hours old, he was found to have jaundice and when he was 24 hours old, the doctors decided there was an underlying problem.  It was discovered that he had been born with a virus, and suddenly there was a lot of unknown.

The virus can manifest in many ways, and there is so much uncertainty ahead.  Our baby boy is a fighter and is doing so well, but we were left with so many questions and so much that we would need to  'wait and see'.

One thing we were told is to keep a close eye on his milestones in the first year, as it will be a good indicator of his future development.  I found myself worrying daily about what he should be doing, despite having had two newborn babies before and knowing that not much is expected in the first weeks.

This week marks six weeks since the dinky one arrived, and today he smiled at me.  He smiled in the morning, and cooed away, he smiled in the afternoon, despite being rather grumpy all day and he smiled before bed as we lay on the floor having tummy time.  He watched me, alert and interested, his eyes lit up first and finally his mouth curled up into that goofy toothless smile.  I couldn't capture it on camera, I was too busy enjoying that little face, but today Finn smiled.

Archie at 18 Months

A year and a half has passed since my littlest one entered the world and it is amazing how far the little dude has come.  From a helpless newborn to a walking talking toddler in what feels like the blink of an eye.  Archie has the cheekiest personality, and every single day he shows a little more.

From the smile that screws up his nose, to the way he tells you off right back if you say no to him, this boy is challenging and cute in equal measure.  He pushes every imaginable boundary, but does so with a smile on his face and a bounce in his step. When we take him to the park, he no longer heads for the slide, but straight for the borders, where he searches for everything he shouldn't and brings me his finds.  Half empty cans of cider, cigarette butts and apple cores amongst other things.  He sees himself as either a litter picker or treasure hunter, I am not sure which.

A Little Boy

The last month has seen the introduction of some rather funky Jake and the Neverland Pirate pants, and we no longer have two in nappies.  Despite me wanting to wait until the summer, the little dude had other ideas and instigated potty training.  He has taken to it so well and I am really glad that I waited rather than pushed it as we spent one day indoors and then went on with our normal lives.

After only a few days, we realised he was dry at night as well, and whilst we haven't yet taken the plunge as we have holidays later this month, realistically nappies are now a thing of the past for my biggest little man.

Potty training not only signalises a step in the right direction, but the end of an era for Dylan.  Nappies were the last bit of babyhood that we have been holding onto, and at two and a half, Dylan has come so far from that beautiful newborn baby he once was that he is barely recognisable.

All those little things that differentiate babies from preschoolers have been left behind.  Milk and other drinks are now drunk from a cup rather than a breast, bottle or beaker, and we never went down the dummy road.  The cot became a bed, and the gro bag was replaced with a duvet.  Afternoon naps are becoming rare, and Dylan barely uses a buggy now, able to walk most places quite easily.

At two and a half, Dylan's speech is well ahead of his age, he is learning to read, he can count, he can understand so much, and he is barely even a toddler anymore, but a little boy, learning at every opportunity, growing before my very eyes.  He is becoming so aware of everything around him, his curiosity and questions helping him make sense of the big world, but still in that simplistic toddler way, where everything is good and pure.

With Potty training being sprung upon me without warning (two months ago he would not have sat on a potty, nevermind used it as a toilet!),  I feel almost nostalgic for the days when my little boy was more dependent, on me and on other people in general.  He is asserting his independence more every day, learning to dress himself, to take himself off to the toilet, to read his own stories.

Dylan is a tall boy, a confident boy and a loving boy, asking for cuddles and to have a snuggle on the sofa with me.  The new milestones have meant that he is choosing to be loving and choosing my comfort and that is one of the best things to come out of it.

Saying goodbye to nappies is more than just a simple goodbye though, it is my little man proving that he is ready for new challenges, for everything that is to come.  It will be time to drop him off at nursery in a few months and later this year I will be choosing schools for my two year old, as he will start at only just turned 4.  The end of nappies and the loss of those baby things means I will soon have a preschooler on my hands.

No longer a baby, but a little boy.

My 26 Month Old

My big little man is now 26 months old and his little character is coming out more and more every single day.  He is cheeky, funny, sweet and beautiful.  He is lively, chatty and desperate to learn about the world around him.  I want to take a mental snapshot of this wonderful age.

He is growing up, and always hungry.  Despite eating a breakfast the same size as mine, as soon as he has eaten the last mouthful, he insists on asking for lunch, dinner and a snack as he is still hungry.  He could probably talk about food all day long and he loves zooming round the house on his skuttlebug going to the 'shops' for bananas and apples.

He is losing the baby talk (although still needs a translator sometimes), but my favourite word he says is crocodile, I don't know why, but it just sounds so cute! His vocabulary gives us a peek into his imagination and I can already see what a magical place it is.

He is having a few issues between you and me which can get confusing when he is desperate for 'you do it' and I am not sure quite which 'you' he means.  Things are often 'mine' instead of 'my' which just sounds a little German when he is shouting 'Mine Biscuit!'

He loves looking at photos, but if the photo is of himself from more than a few months ago he is convinced it is Archie instead. We can spend ages going through photo albums though and he loves going round the house looking at photos on the wall and letting me know who is in them.

He is a big boy and going into some of his 3-4 year clothing.  He is slimming down as he gets more active but still has very much a toddler figure.

He loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates and In The Night Garden and suddenly has found a real interest in TV, although he still won't sit still to watch it.  He likes anything with a good catchy song and is really starting to recognise things, even if he has only seen them once or twice before.

Despite breaking his leg this summer and having only been walking again for around 6 weeks, he is back to normal and has been learning to climb better at the park.  He still has a little catching up to do but I am so proud of how well he is doing.  He is really trying to jump but as yet can't get both feet off the floor together.

His favourite toys are puzzles and his pushchair.  He has moved on to 6,9 and 12 piece floor puzzles now although still needs help for some of the trickier ones.  He loves pushing Mickey Mouse around in his little blue buggy and asks to take it with him everytime we go out.

We have taken the sides off of Dylan's cot now, and he is loving his new found freedom.  He comes into our room in the morning and sits on the bed reading books whilst he waits for us to wake up and take him down stairs.  He doesn't seem particularly bothered by it at all and when he slept in a cot at my parent's house, he didn't mind at all.

He is cheeky, energetic and full of life.  A whirlwind who loves to crash, plane spot and eat biscuits and a fantastic big brother.  My 26 month old is my little buddy and I am enjoying watching him grow into such a beautiful little boy.

Dylan Right Now

Dylan is now 20 months - only four months until he turns 2!

Dylan recognises and can say lots of colours now, including green, red, blue, yellow, pink, orange, grey and white

Dylan would live on oranges given half the chance.

Dylan's favourite words to say are pushchair, kitchen, octopus and door.

Dylan is definitely a bit of a Grandma's boy.

Dylan is loving learning his numbers.

Dylan is enjoying big brotherhood and likes to hold Archie's hand and point out all of his facial features (especially while Archie is trying to enjoy some milk!).

Dylan's favourite books are 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'The Gruffalo'

Dylan wakes up in the morning with the most ridiculous bed hair and always asking for Cheerios and Lego.

Dylan has recently started climbing onto the sofa and chairs, but he still likes help.

Dylan has size 6 feet and is wearing age 2-3 clothes.

Dylan loves to watch Jake and the Neverland Pirates (just for the songs), The Snowman and the Skeleton Dance.

Dylan sleeps with Duckie, an owl cushion, a dog and a bear in his cot.

Dylan is completely and utterly gorgeous.

It Goes So Fast

When you are pregnant for the first time, everyone warns you how fast they grow up, yet you still find yourself wishing away the days and longing for the next milestone.  I loved the first few days, but I was in an adrenaline haze and they flew by.  Before I knew it, my little baby was sitting up, eating solids and showing off his cheeky personality at every opportunity.

This time I am determined to enjoy every single precious moment, because I know how fleeting the newborn days are.  I still find it hard to believe that a whole month has gone by since that wonderful day when I met my beautiful little boy for the first time but I have been trying to enjoy and capture every single day.

Despite knowing the advice, I have let Archie nap on me when he wants to (which is pretty much all the time!).  He may form bad habits but in my opinion there is nothing more precious than curling up with a sleeping newborn snoring away on your chest.  He is my little hot water bottle and we are both happiest snuggled up together.  Our cuddles are limited due to an energetic toddler and his busy social life so I really make the most of the ones we do get.

Our baby bath is sat on the bathroom floor unused, as Archie has shared all of his baths with me.  I love the excuse for skin to skin which we don't get many chances for with the cold weather and he is so relaxed lying in my arms in the warm water.  It won't be long before he is sharing his baths with his big brother, splashing away and singing the penguin songs, so I am enjoying the extra quiet time together whilst he is so small.

It won't be long until Archie is in jeans and T-shirts looking like a real little boy, but for his first month we have chosen to keep him in comfy sleepsuits (apart from his red nose day outfit).  I love him looking like a baby and whilst he sleeps all day (or is meant to), pajamas seem like the best choice!  We are introducing some little outfits now too, but staying with soft and cosy as I know I will have plenty of chances to dress him in trendy togs when he is bigger.

I may be over enthusiastic with my camera phone, but not a day of Archie's life has gone by so far without a photo being taken,  Every day he amazes me with his beauty and I want to remember the moment.  The first time Dylan held his hand, the first time he wore a hand knitted cardigan from Nanny, the first time he fell asleep snoring with his mouth wide open - each moment precious and perfect and eternally recorded to terrorise him as a teenager.

These newborn days go so fast and as I watched my 4 week old baby boy roll over this week I remembered exactly why I am trying so hard to slow down the time.  Every milestone is precious, but every ordinary day is equally so.

The Wonderful World of a Toddler

There is something magical about those precious newborn days and I treasured each and every milky snuggle and windy smile, but right now I am loving the wonderful world of toddlers.

As a baby, I impatiently awaited the next milestone, and for Dylan to learn a new skill or 'trick'.  Nowadays, he is surprising me every day with how much he picks up and how well he learns.  No two days are the same, and his cheeky personality is shining through more all the time.

toddler fancy dress, dragon costume for kids

It was only three short months ago that he sat immobile and played with his toys.  Now his days are spent exploring and he only sits still to eat or sleep.  He toddles from room to room, rearranging the house and finding the greatest pleasures in the simplest of things.  a plastic bottle or empty box can bring hours of entertainment, and one man's rubbish is clearly another's treasure!  Our new house has given him more freedom and space and he can

On the Move!

Dylan has clearly taken turning one very seriously and decided it is time to get mobile.  His first birthday last Thursday saw him pulling himself up from sitting to standing on the sofa for the first time and gingerly walking round.  Fast forward a week and he can now get himself standing from lying on his back with the help of the sofa, confidently cruise round the furniture even letting go for a few seconds to test his balance and crawl!

He is not crawling around the room but he can take to his knees and find his way to the sofa or a table to get himself stood up.  He still seems convinced that crawling is not for him but he can do it now when he wants to! After months of worry as all his friends overtook him and started taking their first steps whilst he sat immobile and content he has joined the ranks and moved himself!

My arms are incredibly happy.  28lb is a lot of weight to carry round and although the havoc has already begun, I am enjoying his new found independence almost as much as he is.  It won't be long until his legs lose some of that puppy fat and his tummy slims down so I am making sure we have plenty of cuddles now whilst he is still my chunky little monkey.

I am so proud of him for doing it and although some days it felt like he would never get it, I know from experience that he likes to learn new things with no warning.  He waits until he completely understands what to do and then goes for it!  It wouldn't surprise me if he started walking soon!

learning to crawl

So to anyone else with a baby that doesn't crawl - they will eventually!  They may be a little late and not that bothered about it but they will get moving and you will almost wish they weren't as your house will look like a hurricane has hit!

The other big change this week has been the start of the tantrums.  Dylan has developed a temper and when he falls down whilst trying to stand up he starts screaming and angrily hitting the sofa as his eyes say 'you should have helped me mummy!'  I much prefer our other developments to the pinching and hitting that comes with these tantrums but I am hoping that standing firm now means the behaviour won't last too long.

So turning one has bought many changes and we are only a week in!  Did you find that one was a major milestone for your little one?

I bet mine is bigger than yours

Nothing prepares you for the competition that is being a parent.  Every mum seems to exaggerate what her child can do, pushing them and hoping for them to reach those milestones before her peers.  There are so many websites telling us what our baby should be doing at each age, and the pressure to have a baby who is 'advanced' is unbelievable.

Baby websites are full of well meaning advice and tick lists to measure your child's development against.
