Capture the Colour

When I heard about this competition from Travel Supermarket I couldn't resist getting my travel pics out.  Back in 2009 I backpacked around the world, met some amazing friends and saw some amazing sights.  My photo albums have long been put away and it was lovely to reminisce and remember the people and places.  The competition involves picking a photo for the colours blue, green, yellow, white and red so here are mine:

sulphur lakes, Tongarira crossing, new zealand

This photo was taken on the Tongariro Crossing, a 26km hike in New Zealand.  Not only did the walk
take us past these beautiful blue sulphur lakes we took in the volcano used in Lord of the Rings films, forest green and snow covered mountains.  It was worth every blister and stopping for a picnic in this spot was just perfect.

New zealand hikesThis photo was taken on another hike in New Zealand.  The walk was along the clifftop but it was about 5 miles in that we suddenly got a glimpse of the sea through the greenery.  Unlike the Tongariro crossing this walk was green and fresh and ended with a beautiful sunset over the sea.

lion's head mountain, south africa, cape town, hiking, perfect picnic spot
Possibly my favourite photo this was taken in South Africa.  I flew straight to Cape Town from London just as the snow was starting to fall and the 37 degree heat was a shocker!  Even so after 3 or 4 days I decided to tackle the lion's head mountain.  Armed with a backpack full of water, a camera and a packed lunch, I found this bench just as I was starting to get hungry.  I would love to see a better picnic spot!  The sandy mountain overlooked the Cape Town fishbowl and I could have sat here all day taking in the beautiful views.

Heli-hiking, new zealand, glacier climbing

Back to New Zealand, (A perfect country for photography!) and I enjoyed an amazing birthday present of a heli-hike to the top of a glacier.  We flew up and then had a guide show us round, walking through ice tunnels and into ice caves and filling up our water bottles in the perfectly clear stream.  Although the glacier was pure ice we were in shorts, hiking boots and crampons as the sun was shining and the weather warm.

polish sunset, orange glow sunset, sunset over river

This photo may be more orange than red but I couldn't resist entering it.  This was taken in Poland a few years ago.  We had been on a rather emotional trip to Auschwitz and in the evening went for a quiet walk along the river.  As the sun started setting an orange-red glow covered everything from the snow to the river to the sky and seemed a rather poignant end to the day.

Travelling has always been a passion of mine and I am so glad I got to see so much of the world before settling down and starting a family - not that it seems to be stopping me as we are taking Dylan on his second holiday later this year!

As this competition closes tomorrow I have not tagged anyone but if you would like to participate then let me know and I can tag you!

  1. I am such a travel bug and have been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places, I miss it now Mads is here, but I know I will be doing it again in the future. Albeit not with a backpack this time . ;)

    1. I think travel will always be important to me and I can't wait to show Dylan and squish more of the world

  2. Wowzers, i'm well jel! lol! You've been to some amazing places, i'm lucky to have holidayed in some fabulous countries but my biggest regret is not exploring more of the world when i had the opportunity too! Something for the future though i'm sure :) xxx
