Making your Maternity Clothes Last.

Being due mid August in my first pregnancy,  my maternity clothes consisted of summer dresses, vests and shorts.  This time I am going to be big over the winter and so a whole new wardrobe is needed.  I have been trying to think of creative ways to make my summer maternity clothes wearable again, as buying a whole new set is certainly a cost I can do without!  I have invested in the staples - some comfy jeans, long sleeved tops and jumpers, but have been making the most of my existing maternity clothes and wearing them in different ways.

So here is a little summer dress (from Matalan) I wore during my pregnancy with Dylan, dressed for autumn.  I originally wore it on it's own with just some pretty sandals but this time have dressed it up with tights, a shirt, a belt and a cardigan.

I have a couple of pairs of comfy maternity shorts (from New Look), and again have used leggings and autumny tops to make them into outfits suitable for the
colder weather.  As it gets chilly, I will use thicker leggings or bigger jumpers but I still think the shorts can stay in my wardrobe.

This is a lovely summery maternity/nursing top (from Mamas and Papas) that I originally wore with just some shorts, but have now dressed it up with my gorgeous Crave maternity jeans and an old short cardigan I found, meaning it still shows off my bump whilst keeping the rest of me covered.  I love bright colours still for the winter so I am enjoying the vibrant red.  This outfit will be perfect post baby as well as there is still easy access for breastfeeding.

I have been making sure my initial maternity purchases were not a waste of money and have loved the chance to be more creative with my wardrobe alongside my more seasonal purchases.  How have you been reusing your clothes whilst pregnant?

I have some lovely maternity clothes from many companies including the gorgeous Crave.

  1. I was pregnant at opposite times of year for my two pregnancies as well, except I did the winter pregnancy the first time and summer the second time. Last time I lived in short dresses and leggings, so I managed to reuse them. Although I spent the majority of this latest pregnancy in existing non-maternity dresses that I already had.
I really think if you're clever you can get away with buying very little maternity wear. X

    1. I did find the summer much easier to get away with not buying much as I had plenty of floaty dresses. Short dresses and leggings certainly seem the most comfortable right now!

  2. Your looking great, I am doing the same but not really with maternity stuff- I am just using old dresses and things I don't mind stretching! x

    1. I get very fussy about what I want to stretch, even if I know I haven't worn it in years! Trying to use a few more old bits though x

  3. I was lucky - my children's birthdays are only 2 days apart, so I went through the same seasons at the same stages of pregnancy. But I've managed to make one dress last another 3 years since my son was born. It was a simple jersey wrap dress, so the only change in the design to harbour the bump was a longer hem at the front. All I had to do was level the hem with my sewing machine and I've got a dress I can wear all the time.

    1. There are some things that really do last and I have looked at maternity stuff that works well for nursing as well in the hope it will last longer! x

  4. I stupidly wore a maternity skirt 4 months after I'd given birth. It was so comfy. It was a M&P bandeau style skirt so I thought no one would notice. Most horrific moment was when I went to a client meeting at work and nipped to the loo. I'd got the skirt on upside down and the tummy band was pointing downwards. I was so embarrassed. Having said that, it hasn't put my off - I still wear my maternity shirts now - they look great as boyfriend shirts x

  5. I had a winter pregnancy first and then a summer pregnancy. Fortunately it wasn't a warm summer so I only needed a couple of thinner tops which I wore with the same trousers! I was also fortunate to be able to borrow a lot of maternity clothes. I found that a lot of my baggier normal tops still fitted, so I just bought some bump band things which went around the tummy to prevent a draft!
